Rescue incidents are often extremely dangerous for rescue personnel and require the application of knowledge, skill, and teamwork. This manual presents the principles and practices of basic fire service rescue in a manner that will enable the student to safely and effectively participate in rescue operations. Included are the most common rescue situations to which firefighters may be called, but some specialty rescue situations are omitted here, such as wilderness search/rescue and underwater search/rescue.This IFSTA manual describes two general elements regarding rescue, assessing the local need for rescue services and incident management. Taking care of planning according to the lessons of the assessment is an important first step which can improve a fire department's capability to management the actual incident. The assessment will involve evaluating the response district and determining potential rescue situations.
