Six years old, Miyuki Yoshida vanishes from her home in Aomori in the Japanese north, to be recovered in a fugue state hours later, inexplicably covered in sooty downs. At twenty-six and working as a nurse, a doppleganger of Miyuki's six-year-old self appears at a preschool in Tokyo, as thousands of migratory birds circle the sky, and faint fires break out across town. Miyuki looks for answers in her dreams and memories from her teens, she starts meeting with blind ornithologists and aggressive boys. A massive societal upheaval is imminent and Miyuki seems to be appointed at its center.

Fire Quake is the first of a trilogy of novels, each centering a woman appointed as a pillar of humanity.
