Book Overview

FIRE IN THE HEARTLAND is a novelized true story that fills in the gaps of our knowledge about little-known events that decided the outcome of the Civil War. The story was obscured after the war and largely forgotten. Its retelling is based on research originally published in popular history magazines that brings the events to life. It provides a unique insight into the personal and political intrigues that were part of the war. And it's a great read.

- Fire in the Heartland gives us a different perspective on the Civil War. As a career military officer, I saw Generals McClellan, Grant, Sherman, Jackson, Lee and others portrayed in different lights. I felt the horrible decisions made by both sides as they tried to protect their territories, find manpower for their armies and limit travel in the young nation as it slowly divided itself. I saw how close Lincoln came to loosing reelection and how close McClellan came to winning the Presidency. Had that happened, our nation today would look very different.

- Fire in the Heartland takes the reader into the levels of the War that are seldom seen. Family divisions have been portrayed before, but the depth of the political intrigue has always needed to be exposed and is done quite interestingly and provocatively.

- A vivid account of the political turmoil within ordinary families and the nation at large before, during, and after the Civil War

- An interesting historical novel and an easy read. The Civil War and the way it fractured families was a very difficult time in our history. I thought this was well presented by the author.

- I must say that I both enjoyed the book, and learned much by reading it, and I, a former history teacher, recommend it highly.
