One World's Science is Another World's Magic

This is a rainy day favorite. A long-time hard scifi fan, I also enjoy scifi with fantasy leanings, if I think it's well done (and doesn't lean too far!). I loved this variation on the clash of two civilizations existing in different dimensions. A network of worlds based on science; Serii, a no-tech world based on magic; the tangling, and eventual conflict between the two. In this book, Quin Hamly, a sorcerer, infiltrates the high-tech worlds of Network to locate the family of two Network refugees that escaped to Serii. He must also assess the threat that Network may pose to his home world. The author has written other books in the Network/Consortium setting, but this is the third involving two of the main characters and my personal favorites, Rhianna and Kaedric. Quin is guided and monitored by Rhianna, the "Infortiare", by tradition, an office occupied by the most powerful sorcerer currently living. They are "aided" by Kaedric, Rhianna's husband and the most powerful and dangerous sorcerer not-quite-living; a former Infortiare until his "death". Meanwhile, Rhianna is also dealing with dissent among the wizard rank and file. The wizards, a notoriously fractious and uncooperative group, are the planet's primary line of defense against a possible Network threat. Truthfully, my favorite parts of this book take place on Serii and when it focuses on the relationship between Rhianna and Kaedric. While not THE main characters, their story and personalities had more appeal for me, while Quin and Katerin weren't quite as compelling; even a tad annoying at times. I also enjoyed the unusual twist on Serii's origins. And so the FOUR stars. An excellent read. I enjoyed it immensely and I do recommend it.

I've read this book fifty times!

This novel follows the life of the immortal wizard Quine Hambly from the age of two until he becomes an emisary (spy) to the high tech civilization that created his race. I can't begin to tell you how much I like this book. It has everything. From sword and sorcery adventure, to intruige and high tech espianage. Can sorcery overcome science? Or will it simply master science and keep going?
