In Book One, young Barry is thrilled to be serving his first Roman Catholic Mass. In the subdued light of an early morning Mass, he is thrilled speaking words in Latin, receiving his first Holy Communion while standing and kneeling so close to the priest, the linen covering the altar, the golden tabernacle holding the sacred hosts and wine. After the Mass, after putting out the lit candles, he is mesmerized by their sweet fragrance permeating the sanctuary. Wanting this feeling at home, he steals a candle off the altar hiding it in his jacket during the walk home. However, after lighting the candle, he accidentally knocks it over and starts a fire in the basement. Fortunately, no one is hurt, but his carelessness, and the discovery he had stolen the candle from church, are a major warning to his parents. After this, Barry continues causing or being involved with problems in school. Some of the problems are from bullies, others are from poor choices. His parents worry about him, until he makes a big announcement in his senior year of high school.
