What's in the cards next for Finlay Donovan?

Finlay Donovan and her nanny/partner-in-crime Vero are in sore need of a girls' weekend away. They plan a trip to Atlantic City, but since it's actually a cover story to negotiate a deal with a dangerous loan shark, save Vero's childhood crush Javi, and hunt down a stolen luxury car, it won't be all fun and games. When Finlay's ex-husband Steven and her mother insist on tagging along, Finlay and Vero suddenly have a few too many meddlesome passengers along for the ride.

Within hours of arriving in their seedy casino hotel, it becomes clear their rescue mission is going to be a bust. When Finlay and Vero sneak into the loan shark's suite to search for clues, they find more than they bargained.

If Finlay can juggle a jealous ex-husband, two precocious kids, her mother's marital issues, and a decomposing loan shark, and find Vero's missing boyfriend, she might get out of Atlantic City in one piece. But will she fold under the pressure and come clean about the things she's done, or be forced to double down?

Another wild ride with Finlay and Vero!

A trip to Atlantic City with Finlay and Vero, plus most of the rest of the gang to rescue Javi from the loan shark Marco and it is one wild road trip! Thankfully a few arcs from previous books are finally resolved (aka the Russian mob) and Finlay and Nick finally get a bit more together time! This one is definitely action packed, so it is great that Finlay doesn't have writer's block or need to write another ending, at least for a bit. Of course there are more dead bodies for Vero and Finlay to cover up, a car and boyfriend to locate and rescue, and a dirty cop to avoid along the way. I do admire how they can find themselves in a mess but manage to get out before getting caught. there is humor and silly situations as well as a bit of hot cop research, and getting to know Finlay's mother better. So, while a few arcs are finished in this book, I really am looking forward to the next one to see what Mrs. Haggerty has been up to!

Humorous mom-com thriller/mystery with a touch of romance

Thanks to NetGalley and Minotaur Books/St. Martin’s Press for a digital advance reader's copy. All comments and opinions are my own. Hilarious and wacky – these novels keep getting more zany, madcap, and fun to read. This fourth in the series picks up right where #3 leaves off, and I found myself breathless from following Finlay and Vero’s antics as they try to rescue Vero’s long-time crush, find a stolen Astin Martin, keep themselves safe from a Russian mob boss and a short-tempered loan shark, and prevent Finlay’s hot cop boyfriend from discovering what’s really going on – he thinks this is a girls’ weekend. The novel takes place in the casinos and hotels of Atlantic City, including a day spa, a male strip club, and parking garages, with Finlay’s mother, ex-husband, and two young children along for the weekend – not realizing they’re part of the coverup for Finlay and Vero’s heroic hijinks. The Marx Brothers-like plot is convoluted with dead bodies needing to be hidden, wild car chases, guns, unlimited cash, and everyone searching for the incriminating information on an elusive flash drive. It all comes together in the end, even for the loan shark’s little dog named Kevin Bacon (a running gag that’s actually funny). In addition to the fast-paced mystery with a twisty plot and quirky characters, each novel in the series includes Finlay trying to write a romance novel while her publishing agent keeps following up to ensure deadlines are met. I recommend starting with the very funny and clever first book “Finlay Donvan Is Killing It” as each novel picks up right where the other leaves off. But don’t worry if you forget some of the details of earlier books because author Cosimano expertly provides back up information that will fill in the gaps. If you’re looking for a humorous mom-com thriller/mystery with some romance, where you don’t have to think too much and where coincidences rule the day, this is the book and series for you.
