Doctor Joseph Murphy must deal with much more than grief upon the death of his spouse. He sees the wispy fragile image of his dead wife everywhere in their home, and concerned that, as a doctor, he cannot medically explain away her presence, he assumes he is losing his mind and feels his only option is to separate himself from his work and his friends. Giving up the demanding lifestyle that his overbearing and dominant wife forced upon them both, he hides himself away; but opting out of his life, presents Joseph with new and unforeseen problems that include assessing his life to this point. When a storm damages his property, Joseph's past--the web of his mistakes, regrets, and lies he has woven--haunts him in addition to his deceased wife. And all his misgivings about his marriage and his life are somehow embodied by a young man that he finds sitting at the bottom of his garden on a bucket. Nathan is dirty and smelly and more than a little "special" and so should not interest Joseph, but it is a fine line between the lie he has been living and the truth that he fears could be far more damaging than any Highland storm.
