Sohma was trapped, married to a narcissist, and marred by her broken past. She needed change but battling long-standing, pervasive patterns ingrained since childhood would prove challenging. Sohma's dysfunctional upbringing was fueled by an abusive, alcoholic stepfather and a mother battling her own demons with drugs. Sohma and her little sister felt abandoned, being told as young girls to move out. Resentment and heartache reigned. As an adult, Sohma gravitated to more unhealthy relationships. Trials mounted through additional loss and despair. Then, her second husband had an affair, left his job, and filed for bankruptcy. During the divorce, Sohma found out she had cancer and her father had a massive heart attack. When Sohma crossed paths with a narcissist, her codependency trumped any red flags evident. Later, a painful but pivotal moment gave Sohma the courage to leave. God sent miracles, but Sohma often rejected them. Clarity came during some debilitating, chronic pain. She understood that far from being avoidable and pointless, pain has a guiding and even inspiring purpose. Thus armed, Sohma was able to choose a better path-and help others experience a similar breakthrough.
