New York Times bestselling author J. A. Jance delivers one of the most dramatically thrilling and powerful novels of her careeran emotional and resonant mystery that takes us deep into Seattle detective J. P. Beaumont's past and raises challenging questions about duty, honor, and the debt that is owed to those who sacrifice their lives for their country Second Watch Getting old is hell. J. P. Beaumont is finally taking some time off to have knee-replacement surgery. But instead of taking his mind off work, the operation plunges him into one of the most perplexing and mind-blowing mysteries he's ever faced. A series of dreams takes him back to his early days on the force with the Seattle PD, and then even earlier, to his days in Vietnam, reminding him of people and events he hasn't thought about in years. Are they just drug-induced hallucinations? Beaumont isn't so sure. When tugging on those threads from long ago leads to present-day murders, Beau's suspicions are confirmed. Some bodies from the second watch just won't stay buried. A masterful demonstration of J. A. Jance's superb craftsmanship, Second Watch is a thought-provoking novel that is also a poignant look at one of the most painful and divisive moments in our historyVietnamand a reminder of the staggering cost of war and the debts we owe to those who served then . . . and those who do now.
In response to the reader who said "Finding A Keeper" was about as deep as a magazine article and that it is full of platitudes...maybe this book wasn't your cup of tea (oops, sorry about the platitude), but from what I've seen and heard, it has helped a lot of women. Sometimes a book doesn't have to be "deep" to be profound. In fact, I get the idea that the author knows all too well that many women "of a certain age" have had it up to here with the "deep" books on finding a husband. Or the comprehensive books. Or the "revolutionary" books. Or the gimmicky books. I think that's why she says her book is simply a "handbook"...a "read it as you need it" guide. You know, the kind you can open up anywhere and find something that might be helpful. Believe it or not, it actually takes real skill to write a book like that. And the author herself admits that a few things she says in the book *are* cliches -- but there's a reason they have become cliches. It's because they reflect the truth. Our lives have become so complicated, and we have all become so sophisticated, that we are looking for complicated answers -- when sometimes the answers really are very simple. If "Finding A Keeper" didn't help you, keep looking and maybe you'll find a book that will. But lots of women have found wisdom and comfort in Ms. Kaplan's book...and some have found husbands as a result of following her advice.
Three cheers

And boost she does. I felt like I had my own private cheerleader pepping and prepping me on to victoriously finding my "keeper". There may be many books out there on the subject of relationships, but few offer the simple but powerful advice provided by a woman who has been married for over 40 years (obviously this woman knows how to do it !) The message that the book offers is timeless and it is written in such a way that I feel Mrs. Kaplan is right there in my living room talking directly to me. A must have for single women who don't know what it is that's wrong with their lovelife...
