Ian Grandidge worked for the North West Ambulance Service, lived with his wife Sam, step-son Mike, and various pets, in a modern three-bedroomed detached house on the fringes of Saddleworth Moor, he was comfortable, and he was happy. And absolutely nothing could change any of that. Could it?---Of course it could. One day, completely out of the blue, I got the urge to go off in search of better weather. I may never know why.Giving up a good career and going off in search of a dream isn't something new, people have been doing it for years. I never expected that I'd be doing it too. But I did. And despite not even having a dream. And my family went with me. From Grotton, where it rains a lot, to Guaro, where it doesn't. This is the tale of why and how I left the north of England, and all the things I knew and loved, and headed off to southern Spain in search of a new life under a hot sun, where I knew no-one, and nothing useful about anything. Would I ever fathom why I chose to live off-grid, despite being uncertain as to where water came from, or how solar electricity worked? All the while trying to refurbish an old farmhouse just to make it liveable. Adjusting to an entirely new way of life is hard enough in itself but throw in a language barrier and some completely unfathomable bureaucracy, and you suddenly have a recipe for potential disaster which leads to some hilarious dealing with local officials, and laugh out loud attempts to blend into local society. Interspersed with recollections from my emergency service days, this is my story, so far...
