This slim volume, which can be read easily in a few sittings, is an excellent introduction to the history of movies, from the toys of the 19th Century to Toy Story. Interesting also are the approximately 300 films cited along the way. The book has some minor shortcomings. In particular, its origin as a German-language book shows up in the generous (but not excessive) space given to the development of German cinema and in the not quite justifiable claims made for the priority of Germans in the technical development of motion pictures on film. But these are only small quibbles in an otherwise excellent book. If one has never read a history of film before, this is the place to start. After Gronemeyer, one might wish to read David Parkinson's "History of Film" (1995) which is part of the excellent "World of Art" series published by Thames and Hudson and which has considerably more meat than Gronemeyer's book. Finally, there is "Film History, an Introduction" (1995) by Kristin Thompson and David Bordwell. This "introduction" is 857 pages long. One can only imagine how long the non-introductory work will be.
