Film and Magic

This book explores various moments of illusion on the screen and, by extension, the question of how magic and film influence one another. The content is structured around the three phases of a magic trick - as depicted in the film *The Prestige*. We thus follow in the footsteps of a magician, initially approaching the subject of magic and cinematography from a historical perspective, before using the insights gained to find answers to the following questions: To what extent did the art of magic contribute to the emergence of cinematography? To what extent did magic and cinema subsequently influence one another? What parallels can be drawn between these two arts, and where, on the other hand, do the differences lie? This historical investigation is followed by a leap forward to the 21st century to analyse two films that not only explore the theme of magic but virtually embody it: "The Prestige" by Christopher Nolan and "The Illusionist" by Neil Burger. I'll take you on a historical journey right up to the present day in Hollywood, and together we'll explore the boundary between reality and illusion
