Fika With a View: The Swedish Art of Coffee Breaks in Nature

By Janni Olsson

Did you know that taking a break could be one of the most important parts of your day?

In Sweden, fika is much more than stopping for a cup of coffee and something sweet. It is a chance to slow down and spend a little time connecting with the people and places around you.

In Fika With a View, Swedish outdoor enthusiast and host of the travel and adventure series Getting Dirty in Japan, Janni Olsson, shares her personal approach to this beloved Swedish tradition through seasonal recipes made both at home and over the campfire, inviting readers to take fika beyond the kitchen and into nature.

Travel through all four seasons as Janni shares some of her favorite ways to experience fika outdoors. Along the way, Fika With a View explores the history and culture behind fika, Swedish traditions, outdoor living, seasonal ingredients, and the small rituals that make an ordinary coffee break feel special.

The recipes bring Swedish fika to life both at home and outdoors, from gooey chocolate kladdkaka and traditional cinnamon rolls to waffles cooked over an open fire and kokkaffe, Swedish campfire coffee brewed directly in a kettle. Some are made in the kitchen and packed for an adventure, while others are prepared right beside the fire, offering simple ways to enjoy the flavors of Swedish fika wherever you happen to be.

Filled with beautiful outdoor photography from Sweden, personal memories, recipes, and practical inspiration, Fika With a View isn't about creating the perfect coffee break. It's about making time for one.
