The twins, her two other owners, have gone away to stay with their teacher, Mrs. McDonald. And Black, Layla's crow friend who accompanies her everywhere she goes, disappears after the surgery. Layla finds herself all alone while facing a newly discovered enemy called the Great Leviathan, the evil leader of the doctors who plans to destroy the world using the tumor. Layla must figure out how to gather an army to fight the monster while keeping track of her family and searching for Black. She meets friends along the way who impact her mission in ways both good and bad. Some tag along, either helping her or dragging her behind; others advise Layla, arming her with knowledge or throwing doubt over her mind. But in the end, Layla alone must lead her friends to fight the Great Leviathan.
