Anna and Lisa Gu, talented authors and illustrators of 15 years old, are identical twins living in Allen, TX. As animal lovers, they have been writing chapter books about animals since third grade. They each completed eight books by the end of eighth grade, four of them won silver key and honorable mentions of the scholastic writing competitions of 2023. Anna wrote Fighting the Great Leviathan in eighth grade and edited in ninth grade.
Layla's Spying Mission is a series about the cancer journey of the author's mom from the perspective of her dog in real life. In Book 1, Layla discovers a black monster known as a tumor is wrecking the health of her favorite human, Mom. In Book 2, Layla searches for the Giant Donut, the only medicine that can cure her owner's cancer, while trying to keep the doctors from performing surgery on Mom. In Book 3, everything falls apart for Layla. The doctors perform the surgery and keep Mom in the hospital despite Layla's enormous efforts to stop them. The twins, her two other owners, have gone away to stay with their teacher, Mrs. McDonald. And Black, Layla's crow friend who accompanies her everywhere she goes, disappears after the surgery. Layla finds herself all alone while facing a newly discovered enemy called the Great Leviathan, the evil leader of the doctors who plans to destroy the world using the tumor. Layla must figure out how to gather an army to fight the monster while keeping track of her family and searching for Black. She meets friends along the way who impact her mission in ways both good and bad. Some tag along, either helping her or dragging her behind; others advise Layla, arming her with knowledge or throwing doubt over her mind. But in the end, Layla alone must lead her friends to fight the Great Leviathan.
