Fifty-Two Reasons to Take the Lord's Supper (Reasons to Use God's Means of Grace)

Our fourth volume in this series of reasons to use the various means of grace that God has supplied to the church concerns the Lord's Supper. There are very different views in Christendom concerning this meal, the purpose it is intended to serve, what is actually taking place when the Lord's people participate and how often it is appropriate for believers to eat it. Some see the Table as simply a means by which we may remember the death of Christ - a safeguard against our forgetfulness and a useful way to keep the wonder of God's saving work fresh in our thinking. We completely agree that this is true of the Lord's Supper, but we believe it functions as more than a mere aide memoire. We do not go as far as those who see the meal as a sacrifice, in which the bread and wine become in reality the body and blood of Christ and are re-presented to God upon an altar. The bread remains bread, and the wine remains wine, and there is no change in them such that they contain grace that may be appropriated physically through eating. Our view is that above and beyond a memorial, the Lord's Supper is a means of grace to the believer. That is to say that through the eyes of faith, the believer may behold Jesus as He is pointed to in the bread and the wine, and his or her soul may be strengthened and nourished - may enjoy more of the influences of the Holy Spirit - through participating in this meal in a worthy manner. We also maintain that all the evidence of Scripture, together with the use of what we hope is sanctified common sense, point to a frequent (no less than weekly) celebration of the Supper. Many of these basic beliefs will be highlighted and supported in this volume.
