A fun book to read before & after visiting Hana, Maui -- & to share with friends who have or have not been here. This review is from a resident of Hana.... one of those fortunate few.
It helps to know Hana, but you don't have to.

FEVER by Nicole Dean is not just a wonderfully funny account of a mainland dropout seeking paradise. It is a thought-provoking narrative for anyone contemplating giving up one life style for another. True, it helps to know Hana, Maui, as I do, because it adds to the enjoyment. But this search for paradise knows no boundries. It really doesn't matter WHERE the seeker is going, it's the search that matters. Dean writes of the quest with tremendous wit, which keeps us from taking ourselves too seriously, but the message is there. And thanks to her writing style, we get it! Readers who know Herman Wouck's Don't Stop the Carnival,a delightful account of a Manhattan Island resident seeking paradise on a tropical island, will, I believe, put Nicole Dean in his category. That's high praise for a first-time novelist.
