Somewhat depressing for children already compassionate toward animals

I saw this book at a gift shop in the Florida Everglades and glanced through it quickly, then decided to look for it used later. I homeschool and my children are 6 and under. I thought it would be a wonderful educational book to follow up on some of the animal facts we learned about on our vacation. It does have a lot of facts and wholesome guidance regarding the conservation of nature and supporting wildlife, which is a priority to teach my children. I knocked off a couple of stars though because I felt like this emphasis was a touch too heavy, to the point where my young children looked discouraged by the sadness of the animals and their situations in the book. The book does end with some optimism, but my children have not asked to read it again.
