"Where there is a will there is a way." Joan Oby Dawson's mother use to say. And so, she drew from her mother's words the inspiration to determine her purpose and move to complete whatever she set her heart to do. Her underlying spirit, resilience, and persistence were key factors throughout her life. She does not believe in giving up. Coming from humble beginnings, Joan was determined make every action one with visible consequences. She pursued her undergraduate degree at the HBCU, Southern University and her first graduate degree at the newly integrated Louisiana State University. However, in a world where your color becomes the yardstick of your potential, Joan found herself navigating the harsh waters of racism in order to complete her studies. She places a high value on life-long learning, even after her PhD degree from New York University. Joan was tested in tough situations once she moved out of the cocoon of Essen Lane into the wider racist world of work and segregation in the late fifties and sixties only to keep her eyes on the value of laughter, happiness and friendship. Joan kept her values and purpose close to her heart. Her constant joy led her to "walk among men and women" who helped her to achieve many wonderful things along the way in her life journey. She is a firm believer that persistence along with knowledge pays off tremendously.
