Scoring a 90th minute goal in football, shooting a buzzer beater in basketball, saving match points, or winning a game in overtime are all extraordinary moments created by fearless players. Do these players know how to kick the ball, shoot a basketball, or hit a forehand better than the rest? Most of the time, they just have an unshakable faith in themselves that makes them achieve this. Even though technical skill is needed and has to be cultivated, mere practicing does not create a player who is courageous, creative, resilient, or confident. Fearless players are not created overnight; their mind has to undergo a long-term development process. They rarely possess enough information to be able to start this development on their own at a young age. Therefore, parents, coaches, and everyone else around them play an important role when it comes to raising someone who doesn't fear daunting moments. Our book contains a model of mental development that we created which explains to the people who are around the player, mainly the parents, how to form an environment that will replace fear with courage. It includes many actual cases that one of the authors, a reputed sports psychologist, witnessed during the course of his career. These cases, encountered repeatedly with slight variations, form the basis of the points made in this book and their interconnectedness served as the foundation for our mental development model. The entire book comes down to the premise that success is a byproduct of a happy and confident player enjoying the game itself.
