Fatima's Story; A journey to a better life

This is a story about Fatima, a 5-year-old refugee girl, who wonders why she doesn't see and hear the birds anymore. Her mother explains to her the reason by showing her a global sphere. She explains to her that birds and animals migrate to find the best place to grow their families. However, migration happens not only to animals but to humans as well, who may be forced to migrate, and sometimes more than one time in their lives, until they will finally find the best place to live. Such is the case of Fatima and her family, who were forced to leave their country in search of better living conditions. Fatima's story constitutes a great opportunity to explain to preschool children what migration is and the reasons that lead to this phenomenon. Fatima's story is a well-thought-out story to be taught in multicultural classrooms, as it was created specifically for a multicultural class, as part of my practicum in a refugee camp in Greece, while I was doing my master in Language Education for Refugees and Migrants, a postgraduate course at the Hellenic Open University (HOU). Explaining first to children about migratory birds and animals may function as an introduction to a multicultural project.
