"Fatal Success" is a novella.
The story is set in the multiracial and multicultural context of the tropical island of Mauritius.
The Ramghunys are a very modest but solidly knit family of Indian origin.
Balkissoon, the husband, is a vegetable planter while Sunita, the wife, takes care of the housekeeping.
The couple has an only child - Ramesh, their beloved son.
The lad has always dreamed of joining the police force one day to help combat the rampant criminality.
In the pursuit of his dream, and in spite of the limited resources of the family - he is supported by his parents who, quite naturally, wish for him a much better future.
As a bright student, Ramesh successfully completes his secondary education and is enrolled in the police force.
Climbing up the hierarchy, he, eventually, reaches the rank of Inspector.
But his rapid success soon turns to tragedy and bitterness
Will the young man ever be able to get out of the gulf his success has cast him in?"
