A very good, and easily readable volume.

I have known the author for more than twenty years now, and so I had no problem whatsoever reading his book. It's very readable, and very enjoyable. His personal anecdotes and stories were inspiring, since I know some of the people to whom he made reference. I like the practical suggestions he makes concerning this discipline--which I have largely neglected in my own spiritual life. I would have liked to seen more research from Christian history--not that it was completely devoid of such research, it wasn't--and a clearer case stated for fasting. Particularly from the point of Church history. I understand there is not a wealth of material from which one can draw research in this area. It is a good book, and it will inspire many people.
