Succinct, yet thorough descriptions of U. S. bombers down through history
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 19 years ago
Shortly after the Wright brothers demonstrated the feasibility of the airplane, military people began planning for how it would be used in war. The first plane designed for military purposes in the United States was flown in 1908, and the first military casualty occurred two weeks later. Fittingly, this first plane was designed by the Wright brothers and they were awarded the first contract issued by the fledgling air arm of the U. S. military. In the years following this event, the bombers have gotten larger, faster and capable of carrying a great deal more destructive power. This book is a recapitulation of the development of the bomber. Twenty five of the bombers are examined, with a picture of each, the specifications in terms of size, weight and speed. There is also a description of how it was used in war, any records that it set and some basic facts about how successful is was when deployed. If you are interested in the development of the American bombers over the years, this book is a brief and effective introduction. The author does a good job in being succinct, yet thorough in his descriptions.
