This study analysed the Brazilian experience with the Family Health Programme (PSF) and the Unified Health System (SUS) in the cities of Piracicaba/SP and Promiss o/SP, both small and medium-sized cities. It showed that the population uses most of the medical resources available through the SUS and that it was still unable to serve the entire population satisfactorily. He highlighted the advances and challenges of the PSF, pointing out the most urgent needs. She concluded by pointing out that despite being well utilised, it still needs improvements in its structure, in hiring new health professionals and in improving care and the scheduling of services.
