Family demands and career disengagement

In this study, I examined the influence of family demands on career disengagement using 92 employee-supervisor pairs. To shed more light on this relationship, three mediators were integrated into the path analysis: family-work conflict, career self-efficacy, and the supervisor's anticipation of career success. Family-work conflict and the supervisor's anticipation of career success are significantly related to career self-efficacy. Furthermore, the supervisor's anticipation of career success influences the employee's career disengagement. The results also pointed to gender-specific differences in the tension between family and career. Furthermore, the results show that the supervisor plays a significant role in the interaction between family and career. Consequently, supervisors are called upon to support their employees in role conflict, as the family-work conflict can have a negative impact on their career.
