This book tells the stories of the four brigades of Alabama troops during the Gettysburg campaign. This work relies heavily on the memories of the participants, as expressed in contemporary and near-contemporary letters, diaries, and reports as well as a variety of polemics, memories, and arguments prepared by the participants up to 40 or more years after the battle. These memories tell us about the battle and also about the soldiers who fought there. We hear their jokes; their worries; and their thoughts about the army, the war, and the country they were passing through; their pride; and their fears. We also hear about their memories: the intensity of combat, the marches, the screwups, and, eventually, the camaraderie among adversaries.
