surprisingly good

This is the tale of Mara as she moves through girlhood to adulthood, told in a collection of short chapters. The storytelling techinique is a bit awkward, leaving large chunks of time unexplained or loitering in one time period for several chapters, but the story is well told and compelling and suits this unusual style. Mara struggles- her story is depressing at times and her choices seem poor. She drifts through her life and simply finds herself in situations, rather than choosing them (false starts). She seems strong enough to prevail, though, and we root for her to find her own path.
