Book Overview

First published in 1964 as a special project of the Falls Church Public Library, this book is a comprehensive survey of the history of Falls Church, Virginia, from its colonial roots up through the 1960s. The main text relates, in detail, the history of the: clergy, government, civic organizations, taverns, inns, natural resources, Revolution, Civil War, African-Americans, railroads, and schools of this community. Each chapter is extensively footnoted and discussions are supported by abstracts from various sources such as church minutes, courthouse records, family Bibles, and old correspondence. There are a total of 109 illustrations, many of them of old residents, residences and landmarks; three early maps of the area are included as well. Following the town history is a series of biographical and genealogical sketches of 105 local families. There are several appendices including a roll of elected mayors, population and tax data, and a list of tithables for 1748/1749. An extensive bibliography and index have also been provided.
