Perfect marriage. Prestigious family. Political privilege. Abigail Lethican s world unravels when her husband admits to infidelity. Reeling from his betrayal, she follows him only to become the prime suspect when he turns up dead. With her trial looming and the media circling, she finds an unexpected ally in her handsome and enigmatic neighbor. As they search for the truth, Abigail discovers her husband's polished facade concealed a maze of dangerous secrets. Sometimes, the deadliest lies hide in plain sight.
The character development was so good, with family dynamics at the center of all the twists and turns in Abigail’s life. It made me think about how people are motivated at their core, what drives them? Do we really KNOW the people we are the closest to?
Of the two central characters, I related to Jim: driven, athletic, and smart - but boy, was he a jerk! I saw myself in Abigail being such a people pleaser, genuinely kind, and wanted to see the best in people. Their relationship story is familiar, a young, driven couple trying to make their way in Chicago. But do they really love each other or are they just a power couple at face value?
What I really appreciated from the author was Abigail’s relationship with her family. Despite her privileged upbringing as a senator’s daughter, their familial love for each other felt really real. They supported Abigail throughout the story, offering advice but not intruding, letting her make her own choices, helping her when they were the wrong ones, and rejoicing in her accomplishments.
This book flows well and makes you want to turn the page to find out what Abigail discovers next. This novel checked a lot of boxes for me: mysterious, deceiving, heartfelt, honest, and dramatic. I’m looking forward to this author’s next book 🤞
