Fall 2020: Scriptures and Reflections

Readings for three months September, October and November, are combined into one book. September themes are faithfulness, conflict resolution, prayer and forgiveness. FAITHFULNESS: In many parts of the world, Christians face not only economic hardships but also physical harm for walking with the Lord. CONFLICT RESOLUTION: Christians benefit from their association with the larger community of faithful. PRAYER: Your prayer life reflects the value you place on your relationship with God. FORGIVENESS: Reconciliation offers us a way to let go of past hurts, but it is a two-way street. The Golden Rule requires us to forgive others to the same extent that we ourselves seek forgiveness. In October 2020 we focus on God's justice using the imagery of the vineyard found in Matthew's Gospel. The purpose of Matthew's Gospel is to convince the Jews that Jesus is the Messiah. Many Jewish leaders saw Jesus as a threat to their comfortable lifestyle. He called them hypocrites (Matthew 22:1-14) and challenged them to follow the rules they set for others. Jesus criticizes the chief priests, the Pharisees and Sadducees who listened to John the Baptist but did not repent (Matthew 21:32). He warns them that the kingdom of God will be taken away from them and given to others (Gentiles) who will be fruitful (Matthew 21:43). On All Souls Day, we remember those who are now at rest with the Lord. During November 2020, Jesus continues to admonish the religious leaders for their hypocrisy. Paul offers advice to his brothers and sisters in Christ. In the parable of the foolish virgins, we are reminded that the hour of our death is unexpected. The parable of the talents urges us to use our God-given gifts. The last Sunday of the church year as we celebrate Jesus, the Son of God and the King of the Universe, we are given a glimpse of the questions we are expected to answer on Judgement Day.
