God's requirement of faithfulness underpins humanity's relationship to God right from the very start. Scripture uses marriage metaphors to illustrate faithfulness - God is Israel's 'Husband' - jealously watching over her, protecting her and providing for her, and his Messiah constitutes the 'Bridegroom' in relation to the Assembly of His people - his 'Bride' - made up of both Jews and Gentiles. In these metaphors we also see the waywardness of God's people and their leaders - described as adultery, sexual 'liberation', 'unnatural' alliances and harlotry - culminating in the 'Great harlot of Babylon'.
