This book is dedicated to the memory of the seventeen men who gave their lives in the First World War and whose names are recorded on the memorial housed at the Gravesend Wesleyan Methodist Church. Each of these men represents not only the sacrifice of a life cut short but also a unique story of service, family, and community. Through careful research and the use of contemporary newspaper reports, official military records, and local archives, this book brings together brief biographical sketches of each man, detailing their upbringing, occupations, military service, and the circumstances of their deaths. Where known, we include the units they served with, the theatres of war in which they fought, and the locations of their graves or commemorative memorials. Eight of the seventeen are pictured in grainy black-and-white photographs, preserved through local press reports of the time. These haunting images offer a glimpse into the faces of a generation lost to war. This publication is part of an ongoing commitment by the Gravesham War Memorials Trust to ensure that they are never forgotten, and the lives behind those names are known and honoured.
