Faded Letters

Survival has always been his way of life, until he realized what living meant.
James spent his life learning how to protect himself, others, and his sanity. Everything he faced in foster care conglomerated into the man he was today: a proud Navy SEAL and dog father. Work was his life, until she sent a letter.
Kaylee had always been described as bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, and bubbly. Her world was happy: recently graduated, new job, and a good boyfriend. When her good boyfriend suddenly shifts, Kaylee finds herself seeking comfort in her pen pal, a man she has never met.
Their letters are the only thing that keeps each other sane, a sense of normality in a world seemingly filled with one traumatic event after the other. He was never supposed to respond to her first letter, and she was never meant to keep writing. But they did.
A bond forged through letters, memories, and deep understanding. There doesn't have to be any hiding when there's no chance in meeting the person on the other side of the letter. But sometimes, the letters just aren't enough.
When James has the unthinkable happen, he finds that even Kaylee's letters aren't enough. Giving up would be easier, and he is so tired of doing the hard thing. But, there's a motto in the SEALs: "The only easy day was yesterday."
Opening up never gets easier, but there is a love, a bond so unexplainable that the letters would have to be read just to understand. Healing is not linear, and apparently, neither is love.
