According to 2010 report highlights that teen childbearing correlates with adverse health and social outcomes for young mothers and their children, often reflecting pre-existing social challenges. Compared to women delaying childbirth until their 20s, teen mothers face higher risks of school dropout, low education, unemployment, poverty, welfare dependency, rapid repeat pregnancies, single parenthood, and divorce. Their infants are more prone to prematurity and mortality, while children of teen mother's fare worse in health and social well-being indicators than those of older mothers. Recognizing these long-term consequences, preventing out-of-wedlock teen pregnancies is a national priority, enshrined in the 1996 welfare reform law. Though teen birth rates dropped in 21 of the last 23 years, they remain elevated compared to most industrialized nations. In the latest data (ages 15-19), about 614,400 teens became pregnant: 89,300 miscarried, 157,500 had legal abortions, resulting in 367,700 births. In 2012, teens accounted for 7.8% of all births and 17.1% of non-marital births.
