Facebook and Other Looming Privacy Scandals

The gravity of the privacy scandal rocking Facebook is better understood from the tone of the CEO - Mr Mark Zuckerberg's apology - "We have a responsibility to protect your information. If we can't, we don't deserve it. ...This was a breach of trust, and I'm sorry we didn't do more at the time. We're now taking steps to make sure this doesn't happen again". Yet, users appear betrayed beyond consolation as evidenced by a massive #deletefacebook user boycott campaign devaluing the company's stock by $50 Billion within days. That's a clear reflection of the painful injury inflicted on victims who every one, has my heartfelt sympathy. But hopping on the #deletefacebook wagon could have been forestalled by realizing much earlier that no one can be anonymous on the Internet as honestly admitted by Mr. Zuckerberg in his apology: "You may have heard about a quiz app built by a university researcher that leaked Facebook data of millions of people in 2014. ...We expect there are others. And when we find them, we will ban them and tell everyone affected". But you can spare yourself all that particularly on Facebook and generally, on the Internet by reading this book now In fact, apart from strangers being able to access any information posted online, how they would use such information is unimaginable. For instance, supplying details about your hobbies, job, family, friends or life story could arm criminals with sufficient information to mount an attack. Publishing something online is like broadcasting to the world.
