A storm is brewing in the desert outside Las Vegas, Nevada. A loud clap of thunder rumbles nearby and lightening streaks across dark clouds. A stream of raindrops slide down the window as a man sits... This description may be from another edition of this product.
Katlin has some mental gifts-she can sense power plays by others and help keep negotiations on a level playing field. She knows she is not powerful, not like her brother or father, but is happy to be working now. When her father died, she had to take over the care of not only her mother but the family home etc. She finally seems to have that situation under control and now can do some work she finds rewarding. Something has gone drastically wrong on her first job. A power void almost takes her and the others in the negotiations out. When they escape the void as well as the building, due to someone else pulling the fire alarm, she is placed in more danger. She helps a man pick up the papers that have fallen out of his briefcase, and when the car behind him blows up, she is suddenly seeing his entire life. She is not supposed to be able to be a "carrier" for power and thoughts but this appears to be what happened. Ryker is what some would call a rogue, or a private bodyguard. He was supposed to be protecting Halster, and while the man is one giant nut case, insistent on driving Ryker nuts, a job is a job. When it becomes obvious that something has passed from Halster to Katlin on his death, she is in danger. Now Katlin is on the run. Her only friend seems to be Ryker, and she knows he is only in it until she can pass on the information that was passed to her to the highest bidder. But she is hoping that with time, and if they both live, he will come to care for her as she does him and they will not only "tear the sheets up" but will spend their life together. I found Eye of the Storm to be a compelling and nail-biting story. I was rooting for Katlin and hoping Ryker would come to care for her as much as I did. Ms. Storm did a wonderful job in creating a world that felt possible as well as making me think about the differences in people. I liked the mix of the two different people both on the path to the same thing, while they don't really believe it, or each other. Eye of the Storm was a thoroughly engaging read. More than ten years later, Katlin's beloved father is dead and her mother's unable to cope with anything. With bills piling up, she needs a job. Due to her lack of experience, she is forced to turn to her father's business associate who hires her on the spot as a Screener. Ryker has been investigating Vector for two years. His current assignment as a bodyguard is named Halster, a man who claims to have some information about Vector which Ryker desperately hopes will be the break he needs. His wife had been killed by Vector lackeys. Ryker is out for vengeance. Katlin's attending her second business meeting as a Screener. Her duty is to keep the Talents in the room from unduly influencing each other during the meeting. During the meeting a Black Void appears and suddenly she's in a fight for her life until somebody pulls the fire alarm and it disappears. Everyone exited the building and once outside Katlin sees two men, one practically dragging the other. The bag that the smaller man is carrying falls and bursts open scattering the papers that it had held. A vehicle explodes when Katlin bends over to help pick up the scattered papers. She's left unharmed but the small man is mortally injured. As she attempts to help him, their gazes lock and images begin to fill her mind, moving too fast to decipher - he's passed on all the information about Vector and now Katlin is in serious danger. Her best chance for survival appears to be the larger man who had been with the dead man, Ryker. Ryker's only interest in keeping her alive is finding someone to retrieve the information that Halster had stored in her memory. EYE OF THE STORM is one of those books that you start reading expecting to be entertained for a few hours but you quickly find yourself immersed in the storyline and are unable to put down. I absolutely love the idea of being able to harness power from the elements around us, and just the thought of being able to mentally "slap down" tentacles of energy from another Talent, like he is a naughty child. The relationship that develops between Ryker and Katlin is intense and full of passion and a pleasure to read. Samantha Storm writes a kick-butt story with genuinely likable characters. Hopefully we'll see a story for Katlin's brother, Cole, in the future. I'm extremely curious about what happens with him after this story ends. Chrissy Dionne (
