Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is very quickly becoming a mainstream therapy for patients experiencing acute, severe, and often medically refractory cardiopulmonary failure. Over the years, the technology has improved and the guidelines, protocols, and indications for therapy have been refined.
