Great Collection of Baseball Poetry for Children

I was in elementary school when this book came out. One of my friends checked it out from the school library and shared some of the poems with the class during "library time"; I liked what I heard and kept the name of the book in the back of my mind. Years later, as an education major in college, I received an assignment in which I had to analyze poetry for children. I saw this book at the community library and immediately recalled it from years earlier. The poems are excellent and will capture the attention of anyone who is interested in baseball, softball, or sports in general. One poem in particular stands out--"Teammates". This gem provides a poetic look at the story of Jackie Robinson and his acceptance in the clubhouse by teammate Pee Wee Reese. This poem can be used as the introduction to a civil rights/African-American History Month lesson, can be used to introduce a Jackie Robinson story from another text (I remember reading one in a Houghton-Mifflin basal reader in fifth grade), or could be used simply to teach a lesson on tolerance and acceptance of others. It can even be used to relate to other concepts--I related the poem to the outreach effort of former presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton when I did my report; the two men no longer saw each other as a republican and a democrat but as teammates and friends. The possibilities are endless with this poem!!! The other poems are also worth checking out as well, but "Teammates" makes the book worth every penny.
