Using the concepts and practices of applied geology as its central theme, here is a balanced and comprehensive treatment of the geological, geochemical, geophysical, and economic elements of exploration and mining. Offers an overview of the methods and aims in mineral exploration and production and gives coverage of the geologic principles of ore deposits and the geomorphic environment. Deals with ''hard'' minerals and the nonfluid sources of materials and energy in the continental masses and in ocean basins. This edition has been expanded to include recent advances in applications of satellite imagery, lithogeochemical surveys, isotope geochemistry, and other developments in the field. Also covers current uses of computers in mineral exploration programs. Features case histories, a current references section, and financial data.
From Front Jacket: "Built around the scientific and technical elements of mineral exploration, this book provides a comprehensive...overview of the geologist's work in mineral discovery and mining. Part 1 deals with the geology of mineral deposits. A chapter on mineral bodies in the zone of weathering emphasizes the appearance of mineralization at the scene of field investigators. Part 2 introduces the engineering factors in mining and exploration - rock and soil mechanics, hydrology, and mining practice. Part 3 considers the economic factors a geologist must use to work with engineers and managers in choosing favorable sites for exploration and mining. Part 4 discusses the collection and analysis of geological, geochemical, and geophysical data in logical sequence - from preliminary studies to the recommendation for mine development and the search for additional ore reserves. Part 5 covers exploration and mining programs, emphasizing the planning and implementation of ore discovery and production work on behalf of government and private enterprise organizations. Complete with useful tables and appendices. "

This book has been very useful to me. I have a small mine of my own and have used it extensively. I had a hard time locating a good book on the subject...I went through the University of Arizona library. It's a bit expensive, but if you use it, it's worth it.
