Explaining Sweden's Baltic Policy: Construction of Regionalism in Northeastern Europe

Diploma Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Other States, grade: 1, University of Salzburg (Fachbereich f r Politikwissenschaft und Soziologie), language: English, abstract: The deep geopolitical changes, which shattered Europe between 1985 and 2004, present the background for the analysis of the Swedish Baltic Policy. This regional Foreign-Policy of Sweden, in the author's opinion, was coined by strategic planning in the sphere of High Politics causing an engagement in the transformation of the Baltic Sea region and North-eastern Europe (a self declared patronage in connection with the efforts of the three Baltic States to become EU and NATO members and the achievement of a temporary and limited hegesy in the regional context) especially between 1991 and 1994, the time of the Bildt government, which contrasts significantly with similar policies of other small states, particularly with Austria's role in Central Europe.
