Experimental Studies on Wire Electric Discharge Machining of Superalloys

Superalloys, Incoloy 825, Inconel 603 XL, Monel K400, and Inconel 600 have the general properties of high strength, high toughness, and high corrosion resistance. Incoloy 825 has good mechanical properties from cryogenic temperatures to moderately high temperatures. Exposure to temperatures above 540 C can make greater changes in the result in microstructure (phase formation) that significantly bring down the ductility and has a considerable impact strength. The application includes chemical processing, pollution control, oil, and gas recovery, acid production, pickling operations, nuclear fuel reprocessing, and handling of radioactive wastes. Inconel 603 XL (nickel and chromium alloy) are highly resistant to elevated temperature oxidation and nitration. Inconel 603 XL is known to be resistant to oxide spalling thus making this alloy very useful in areas where oxide contamination cannot be tolerated such as electronics, ceramics, glass, and tableware industries. Monel K400 has been employed in food processing, chemical industries, nuclear reactors, and sub-marine and properties such as high strength, toughness, high corrosion resistance. Inconel 600 (nickel and chromium alloy), having high strength, toughness, high corrosion resistance, has been employed in the heat exchanger tube, sub-marine, nuclear reactors, and ship propellers. The superalloys are applied to a wide range of components that require cutting and drilling holes in it. Therefore, feasible machining of superalloys is performed by various machining processes ranging from traditional machining to non-traditional machinings like mechanical drilling, water jet machining, laser-cut machining, and electrical discharge machining. The superalloys are difficult to machine by using traditional machining processes. Therefore, the superalloys are focused on non-traditional machining processes. In many of the applications squared hole made on superalloys is required.
