Extreme makeover!

"What's wrong with me?" "Why can't I have the peace I see in other Christians?" I opened this book and these questions popped out off the page at me. I know I've been looking for a few more light reads lately, but this book seemed to side swipe me when I opened it. Sharon's beginning story is like my own. I understand her desire to want to be beautiful and the feelings of inferiority growing up. Most woman (if not all) want to be beautiful on some level, but we don't necessarily know what that means. How do we become beautiful on the inside when so many issues eating us up on the inside? Sharon points out in the very first chapter that even though we become Christians and our spiritual make over is complete, it doesn't mean that soul is there. "Inner beauty is the result of God's transforming power in the heart of a willing soul. He doesn't simply cover up our flaws; He miraculously starts from scratch and makes us new." I love this because I've been struggling with this even now. I think sometimes we as Christians think we should have it together and we fight God... we aren't willing to let the change happen. I've been praying this week "Lord change me." instead of "Lord help me." Because the truth is if I ask for his help, it's like I have a part in it, and I don't. I want to be his vessel for His work instead of my work. (and that's hard to admit when I think I should know better!!) Each chapter in Experience the Ultimate Makeover- Discovering God's Transforming Power by Sharon Jaynes touches, informs, and brings to light issues that we want to ignore. Isn't starting at the beginning a great place to understand why we need a makeover? I've heard before but never really understood about the parts that we're made up of. Sharon explains this so well I finally got it! We're made up of three parts - body, soul & spirit. Sharon uses the example of an apple and what it would be like to bite into a beautiful apple, only to taste rotten mush inside. While I've understood the inside and out, I've never really placed it together with being my tent - my body, my soul - the fruit, and the seeds being the spirit. The seed inside determines the fruit... oh how that makes so much more sense to me now! Which brings me to a quote that captured my attention: "The basis for Eve's temptation, and for ours as well, is the lie that God is somehow holding out on us." Ouch! Do I think that? I know I can say all I want that I believe God's word as truth, but until I apply it to my soul it is meaningless. Do I think he's holding out on me? I may say no, but my actions say something else. The Ultimate Make over is a beautiful journey into what we need to be and how we can get there. It's reaffirming and refreshing like a pedicure.. it helps remove the old crusties from being in the cold all winter and refreshes us to let us feel whole again. I love that Sharon uses so much of God's Word and pushes it on us... helping us to heal

Uplifting devotional for being beautiful from the inside out

Experience the Ultimate Makeover by Sharon Jaynes is a fantastic devotional for women. It's written in the tone of a spa or makeover treatment with cute chapter headings, but the text is rock solid faith. Jaynes is encouraging women to become new from the inside out through Christ. Dumping the lies we believe about ourselves, getting rid of baggage God has already forgiven, and trusting Him with our future is some of her advice. The chapter that resonated most strongly with me was about the labels that we put on ourselves: fat, old, ugly, etc, etc. And the labels that God has put on us: salt of the earth, light of the world, child of God, co-heir with Jesus, plus two more pages of beautiful names all with Scripture references. When I find myself thinking negatively about myself, I repeat some of the names Jaynes gives, and it reminds me of who God says I am. And if God says I am those things, who am I (or who is anyone else) to argue? Each chapter has many Bible verses to support Jayne's advice, and the main theme of the book is: 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! Bless yourself and a friend with this book!
