This people does not take part in the government of the world but, as a pilgrim, lives peacefully, giving to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's. He is looking up, and his Father's eye sees him. You have your trust in God, and you depend on Him to supply all your needs daily. His walk is one of faith, of trials, and often of weakness. Here the waters of Mara are tested, followed by the fresh waters and palm trees of Elim.
Here Amalek comes out to face him, but God is with him now, as he had been for him in the Red Sea. Thus, all his enemies are defeated because God is stronger than his adversaries.

For the believer the desert is the school of God. There he learns to know his own weakness and weakness, and to taste the grace and power of a living God. He knows now, by theory as by hard experience, that good does not dwell in his flesh. The flesh has had a chance to reveal itself and it has. Here too he proves that the God of all grace is sufficient for all emergencies, restoring him when he falls. God is your strength in times of weakness, your deliverer in battle, your barn and storehouse every step of the way.
