A Fascinating Story

EXISTENTIAL EXODUS is an arresting tale of self discovery. I enjoyed watching Henry & Iris grow as individuals & as a couple. The poetic language & shifting landscapes convey the inner tensions they experience in their quest for redemption.

Existential Odyssey

Existential Exodus is an engrossing existential odyssey. Throughout their journey, we feel the characters' agony and heroic efforts to be clean of drugs and to find their place in the world. I learned much too - particularly about Rastafarians. Because of all the background information provided about them, I was really there with the characters in the Jamaica hills. I particulary enjoyed this book because its metaphorical language is obviously that of an accomplished poet.

Not "Addiction Fiction"

Although one might get the impression from Surfergirl's synopsis that Existential Exodus falls in the genre of "addiction fiction", this is not the case. Henry defeats his drug addiction soon after escaping the City. He continues to dabble but it doesn't control his life. The novel is about a quest to fill that void. It's a ride most of us can relate to. Hold out your thumb.

Novel not as heavy as title suggests

EXISTENTIAL EXODUS is a life affirming story of redemption. It is not a work of philosophy, but a work of fiction. "Existential" refers more to existential angst than to existential philosophy. Although the search is frustrating, to say the least, the end is uplifting. It is a quick read which I enjoyed very much. A good way to begin my summer reading list.

Must read this summer!

Existential Exodus by Paul Grenert is a great read and delivers an inspiring story. I'm including a synopsis! Don't miss it! Existential Exodus is the story of Henry, a drug addict who flees New York in order to break his addiction. He arrives in Jamaica where he falls in love with Iris and together they launch a search for a better life. This brings them to the Rastafarian hills, the Amish country, an Indian reservation, Spain, and finally Italy, where they settle happily, enamored of the more laid-back lifestyle, the warm people and the great art. There they pursue their respective arts, no longer hoping for an alien spaceship to take them away.
