The book is absolutely marvelous! It gives a completely new angle to creative knitting. So many new ideas, the pictures are great, and the descriptions are simple but very helpful.
Lots of different kinds of modules

Everyone credits Horst Schulz with devising all sorts of colorful patchwork knitting techniques that have inspired many subsequent works. Yet for the longest time this book was not marketed in the US (it is translated from German, published by a South African publisher). Finally listings for it are showing up, but you still have to hunt to find someone who actually sells it (as of this writing). Once I finally did get it, I could see that Patricia Werner's book, Dazzling Knits, has similar coverage (the cover jacket from Werner's book appears in Schultz's book). Another book with similar coverage is Ginger Luters' Module Magic. The styles and color sense of all these books is similar, though of course all the garments can be made with other less bright color palettes. However, this book by Horst Schultz has a few kinds of modules that the others do not. For example, various non-stockinette strip designs: knit/garter alternations, cable strips & blocks, diamond stripes that look like Fassett would do, various circle patterns. This book is not a long book (just over 60 pages), but it is also more concise than some others so that lots of knitting possibilities are covered efficiently. For some of the modules there is only a page or three, but that is all that is needed to see how to make and use them. It is a great idea book, but not the only one. Modular or patchwork knitting is good for getting started breaking out of flat panel knitting into something a bit more freeform but still styled and constructed.
Original Ideas in Knitting

Horst Shulz came up with the idea of Patchwork Knitting and since then, passed it on to others. This book is full of neat ideas, but is not a "pattern" book. It is the first of it's kind. There are many others now, but this is the original. I love the idea of knitting little bits and joining those to make the finished product. His designs are unique and his colors are great, start from here and see where it takes you. Have fun creating your own Patchwork Knits!
