Evolution of the Bini Kingdom

This book provides a concise overview of the historical realities of the Edo People. Communities and villages that were previously well-dispersed relinquished their authorities to form a united kingdom called Igodomigodo. The kingdom was ruled by heads who were called the Ogisos. Ogiso Owode was the last Ogiso to rule Igodomigodo before the dynasty of the Obas. The first Oba was a descendant of Ogiso Owode. It was during the rulership of Ọba Ovonramwen that the crisis between the British and the kingdom escalated to a war.
This book outlines the reason for the Bini Massacre and the following war with the British Forces.
The Obas were elected along bloodline as true monarchs and were highly revered. The dynasty evolved into an efficient rulership system. The history of the Bini Kingdom spans several centuries and is traceable in facts.
This book also outlines the Bini traditional rights of inheritance, the concept of "Igiogbe"..The succession rule of the Binis perpetuates the rule of primogeniture, Oba Ewuakpe, after the sacrifice of Queen Iden. This rule specifies that the eldest surviving son of the patriarch of a household becomes his successor in fact, provided he has performed the required funeral rites of his father.
Women played vital roles in the evolution of the Bini Kingdom. The three women who made history in the Bini kingdom, Queen Osaghe, the wife of Ogiso Owode; Queen Iden; and Queen Idia. These women stirred up sentiments, influences, and opinions within the kingdom. The various roles they played in advancing the rulership of the kingdom or otherwise attempting to bring it to disrepute.were highlighted.
In all, the Bini Kingdom was administered as an independent country with full international representation before the advent of the amalgamation of the differing sovereign nationalities by the British in 1914.
