Evidence of Love

Catherine and Harry are two high-powered young professionals living in Washington, D.C., and engaged to be married in a few short months. Harry works as a special adviser to the president and Catherine as a publicist for the vice president. Once happy and more-or-less carefree, Harry and Catherine now have such little time for each other that Catherine begins to worry about the future of their relationship, and she wonders what happened to the Harry she met and fell in love with in New York. But when Harry goes missing, she is left to question how much she really knows about him and what he knows of her. Summoning deeper themes of lost innocence, human relationships, and ultimately how well we know and understand those closest to us, this elegant debut also stirs up the grit of political Washington and reads as a love letter for the romance of New York.

at first,, an off-putting title........but--

as other reviewers in this space have noted, this book is much more than it's title, and yes, it was riveting, for me. i thoroughly enjoyed the main characters, the intrigue, and the surprise element, did truly surprise me!

A Gem of a Book

What a delightful and riveting book. I am not very keen on suspense stories but the combination of political intrigue and beautiful prose kept me up most of the night. I just could not bear to stop reading. This is an outstanding first novel, and I look forward to future books from a talented and fresh young author.

Almost there

There is a lot to love about this novel: evocative prose, an insider's look at Washington and an intriguing plot that McConnell launches into right from the start. Evidence of Love doesn't add up to enough, though. McConnell guards her characters so closely that it's tough to feel for them. At first, the premise of this story reminded me of another recent novel, Now You See It by Allison Lynn, which is also about a character whose spouse disappears. Lynn's book is more haunting, and gets deeper into the issues (do you really know your loved ones?), but Evidence of Love is still worth the ride for McConnell's beautifully descriptive writing.

Loved this book

This book is one of the most enjoyable books I have read in a very long time. Melissa McConnell tells this haunting story with perfect attention to detail...I was unable to put it down. I am now a devoted fan of Melissa McConnell and anxiously await her next book.

Absorbing and beautifully done

I don't know how she does it: Melissa McConnell weaves together elements of the spy thriller, political melodrama, chick lit and literary fiction, and, somehow, makes it all work. "Evidence of Love," despite the sappy title, is a genuine page-turner with interludes of expertly done memoir and description. As someone who hates "The West Wing" and considers most political fiction deadly, I found McConnell's description of the White House and its intrigue fascinating and accessible. The ending falls a bit flat, especially after the writer has shown evidence of talent far beyond the typical thriller, but the book still holds up as a well-written, suspenseful and insightful read. I hope it finds some readers who can think outside the genre.
