The novel focuses on a group of young adults who discover that they have been unknowing participants in an experiment. They have been treated for years with a drug whose purpose was to make them immune to advertising. As they find out more about the "Beta Wave Project," they begin to understand who started the experiment, who stopped it, and why. The group soon finds itself at odds with several multinational corporations who will stop at nothing to make sure that advertising and control of market forces continues to become more powerful and effective.
