Everyone in This Town Knows Something about You: A Southern Gothic Psychological Thriller
Summer 1989. Hanging Fork, Kentucky.
Linda Rae Kowalski is thirty-four and drives Route 6. Seventy-eight Blue Bird, sixty-three kids, two DUIs, and a pocket full of her sister's Dexatrim. Between June and November she writes down everything she sees.
The van that parks at 114 McKinley at two in the morning. The voice on the CB that counts backward from one hundred every afternoon at 3:17. The strawberry barrette on the rubber floor of the bus. The sandal in the glove box. The note in her retainer case that says WE KNOW YOU TOOK IT.
And the Dermott twins in seat nine, who have drawn the same picture every day for nine months: a yellow house, a brown Cutlass, orange fire coming out the windows, and a woman in the doorway.
Linda is an unreliable woman. Losing weight she didn't mean to lose and time she doesn't know is gone.
Everything she wrote down was true. That is not the same as saying she understood it.
Because everyone on Route 6 knows something about Linda Rae Kowalski. Everyone in McKinney knows. Everyone at the Gulf station and the PTA and the school board knows.
She is the last to find out.
EVERYONE IN THIS TOWN KNOWS SOMETHING ABOUT YOU is a literary thriller about memory, motherhood, and the way a small town can keep a secret by agreeing to keep it. Told in present tense from a spiral notebook and three degrading VHS tapes, it is a story about what happens when sixty-three children decide to write down what they saw and not let a grown person tell them different.
This novel deals with the death of a young child, with the loss and recovery of memory around it, and with substance use. Nothing involving the child is depicted on the page.
