Everyday Racism

EVERYDAY RACISM CHANGED MY LIFE, April 24, 2002I am a black man. Before I read Everyday Racism, I had an uncomfortable feeling that indicated I felt whites were superior. After reading Everyday Racism, I realized that no race is superior. When I understood that from this book,I was changed in the twinkling of an eye. For the first time, I began feeling equal to whites and will not go back to the bondage of considering them superior. Everyday Racism was my teacher.I invite you to read a book that will change your life. If you are white, the change may be different. Whatever change this book makes in your life, it will be beneficial. If you read it, you will get that good benifit it has for you. Anytime a book changes lives for good like Everyday Racism, it is worth reading. I thank author Annie S. Barnes for lifting the white bondage out of my spirit and off my shoulders. My plea is for you to let her free you from whatever bondage has you chained--asense of superiority or a sense of inferiority and so much more.

I can relate

I can relate to these young people's experiences. One night in September 2000 as I returned from New York to Norfolk Virginia. I was stop by a Virginia Beach Police Officer for driving while being black. I came off the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel exit, stop at a traffic light and made visual eye contact with a patrolman in the other vehicle lane. At that moment I thought nothing of it and proceeded on my way. I drove several miles occasionally glancing into my rearview mirror to notice that he was following me. I got a bad feeling, I knew something was up. I had driven several miles on Shore Drive to the city limits of Virginia Beach and Norfolk. Right before I crossed into Norfolk, he flashed his lights for me to stop. The officer said this was a routine traffic stop and he wanted to know if this was my vehicle and for me to show him some ID. After a 30 minute delay with the patrolman having made six trips between my vehicle and his, I was told that I had swerved between traffic lanes and I should be more careful. No ticket was issued by the patrolmen. I proceeded on my way home with no other incidents. Go figure! Mrs. Barnes you hit the nail on the head with this book.

Still Racism? America in the 21st century

Our America in the 21st century is not a place for racism. We are now and will be in the future a global nation. It is however, interesting to know how many African Americans feel. I found Barnes' book very helpful since I had no idea that African Americans were experiencing such slights. Barnes has done a fine job of introducing me to a world that I did not know existed. I wish that more people would write about the kind of experiences that ethnic communities suffer. She has made me very aware of others perceptions. I think that this book is a must read for all of the European Americans I know. I gave many of my family and friends copies for Christmas. Bravo Ms. Barnes. You have certainly enlightened me.

Everyday Racism Still happens Everyday

Racism still happens all the time today. The accounts in this book reflect things that are still happening that people don't want to admit. White on Black racism is still a HUGE problem. While racism does exist in many other forms, this does not obliterate the racism that is still perpetuated by whites on blacks. It takes many forms from overt to subtle, and it must be dealt with. This book exposes it and should be a great cause for conversation. The book does not limit racism to these two groups, but this form is the focus of this account. Readers will surely be capable of applying these lessons wherever necessary and to whatever other grups. I agree with the author that racism perpetuated by a person with power is MOST damaging--beginning with lynchings where blacks were powerless - to racist acts in corporations today that create artifical blocks to success -- to documented difficulties for blacks in obtaining money from lending institutions (vis-a-vis similar credit ratings and financial positions to their white counterparts). This book is not to be dismissed lightly on the grounds that it does not cover ALL facets and dimensions of what is being perpetuated today. One can surely increase awareness by reading it.
